CHAPTER TEN

Rafe stood on his balcony and looked down at the peaceful canal below. Wisps of the dream returned to torment him. Jin: wrapping her arms around him and pressing her body against his back. Jin: arching her neck for him to taste while pressing her hot, damp core against his arousal. Jin: crying out in ecstasy as he flew to join her.

Jin.

Was that even her name? It was a boy’s name, wasn’t it? Was anything she told him true?

The bitter taste of betrayal filled his mouth and he took another swallow of wine from the glass he held in his hand. It was a hell of a lot better than the muck the Romans drank, but, in this moment, it too tasted sour.

Life had soured for him.

Because Jin had made a fool of him and he’d rejected her. Because life without Jin was no life at all.

Rafe heard the doorbell chime. Frowning, he went to answer it. Who would come visiting him? He had few friends, certainly no one who would drop by unannounced.

At the door he found a man he knew only by sight. Frown deepening, he waited to hear what the man had to say for himself. He was the proverbial tall, dark and handsome, his looks and casual grace reminding him of one of those latin lover matinee idols of the silent movie era. Although he appeared to be in his late thirties or early forties, as an Old Timer like Rafe, he would be hundreds of years older than that.

‘I am Julio Santa Catarina. May I come in?’

‘What is this about? I am not in the mood for company.’

‘Understandable. But although talking might feel like the last thing you want to do, it is actually the first thing you should do. I speak from experience.’

Curious now, Rafe gestured for the Jumper to enter. Now that he put the name to the face, he knew who this man was. He was part of the Child Retrieval Program and had created quite a stir in its early days by initiating unsanctioned Retrievals of children at risk. From his actions had come much of the early evidence that had convinced the government that when Jumpers interacted with timelines in-situ they were simply fulfilling destiny. ‘If we think to Retrieve a child, then it is likely that was exactly what we did,’ was the odd catch-phrase that did the rounds at that time.

Julio took the single lounge chair and sprawled on it comfortably. Rafe sat across from him on the matching teal green faux leather sofa. He waited.

‘You feel betrayed by the woman you love. You feel overwhelmed by the emotions that are surging through you. Your sex drive is through the roof, far more so than it ever was back before LGP. Stop me if I say anything that is incorrect,’ Julio said laconically.

Rafe felt himself bridling. What gave this stranger the right to invade his home and tell him what he was feeling?

‘And you resent the fact that I know what you’re feeling better than you do right now,’ Julio added.
